Organic vs. paid visibility in AI answers: how they work together

How organic mentions and ads in ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews relate, what studies show about clicks and citations, and how to decide where paid budget helps.

By myadai · Published · Updated · Facts checked

Short answer: In AI assistants, paid and organic visibility are separate systems. Ads in ChatGPT appear under the answer and, according to OpenAI, do not change it. Being named inside the answer is organic and has to be earned – through content, sources and technical access. The two support each other: studies of Google’s AI Overviews show brands cited organically also get more clicks on their ads. Measure where you are named first, then put ad budget where you are missing.

OpenAI is explicit about the separation: “Ads do not influence the answers ChatGPT gives you” (OpenAI, January 16, 2026). Products uploaded for ChatGPT product-feed ads “will not appear in organic ChatGPT conversations” during the beta (OpenAI Help Center).

Google’s ads inside AI Overviews are matched to both the search query and the AI Overview content, and advertisers cannot opt in or out of the placement (Google Ads Help).

What the data says about clicks

AI answers take clicks away from classic results – organic and paid:

  • Ahrefs found that when an AI Overview appears, the click-through rate of the first organic result is 58% lower on average (300,000 keywords, Google Search Console data from December 2023 vs. December 2025) (Ahrefs, February 4, 2026).
  • Seer Interactive measured paid CTR on queries with AI Overviews at a stable 14.6–16.2% between January 2025 and February 2026, while paid CTR on queries without AI Overviews fell from 26% to 21.8% (53 brands, 5.47 million queries) (Seer Interactive, April 24, 2026).

Organic citations are associated with higher paid CTR

The most useful finding for budget decisions comes from the same Seer study. On queries with an AI Overview, in 2025:

Brand in the AI OverviewOrganic CTRPaid CTR
Cited2.07%15.74%
Not cited0.94%11.19%

Brands that the AI Overview cited got more than twice the organic click-through rate and about 40% more paid click-through than brands that were not cited (Seer Interactive). This is a correlation across 53 brands, not proof of cause – but it fits what you would expect: an ad from a brand the answer just recommended is more convincing.

Google rankings are not enough

Being on page one of Google does not mean AI assistants will name you:

  • Only 37.9% of the pages cited in Google AI Overviews ranked in the top 10 for the same query in January 2026, down from 76% in mid-2025 (Ahrefs, March 2, 2026).
  • Across 15,000 long-tail queries, about 8% of URLs cited by ChatGPT, 8.2% by Gemini and 8.6% by Copilot ranked in Google’s top 10; Perplexity was higher at 28.6% (Ahrefs, August 11, 2025).

AI assistants pull from reviews, comparison articles, forums, videos and retailer pages – often sources you do not control. That is why organic AI visibility needs its own measurement.

A practical way to split the work

  1. Measure organic visibility per buying question. Ask the assistants the questions your customers ask – “best running shoes for flat feet”, “where to buy contact lenses online” – several times, because answers vary. Record whether you are named, at which position, which competitors are named and which sources are cited. Our sister product zitaso does exactly this for ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google.
  2. Sort the questions into three groups:
    • Named often: protect with content and sources; ads optional.
    • Named sometimes: improve sources and content first; test ads to fill the gap.
    • Not named, competitors named: paid ads are the fastest way into these answers while you work on organic visibility.
  3. Write ads for the gaps. Use the exact questions where you are missing as context hints for ChatGPT ads and as input for your Google campaigns.
  4. Fix the technical basics for both: allow AI crawlers in robots.txt – ChatGPT ads even require that your landing pages do not block OAI-AdsBot and OAI-SearchBot (OpenAI Help Center) – and keep product data and structured data complete.
  5. Measure both sides over time: organic mention rate per question, and paid cost per acquisition from clean conversion tracking.

Note for review: our first real zitaso run on October 4, 2026 returned no myadai mentions or own-domain citations across 63 US/English results for seven keywords. This is a baseline with one sample per prompt and engine, not evidence of a trend or of consumer-UI coverage. Add a comparison only after a second independently timed run. Why both matter for shops

Similarweb found that 89% of consumers who use AI for shopping also use search engines – “Consumers are not switching tools – they are stacking them” (Similarweb). A shopper may meet your brand in a ChatGPT answer, see your ad below it, and buy days later through Google. Paid and organic visibility in AI answers are two halves of the same job: being present wherever that decision happens.

FAQ

Can I pay to be mentioned in ChatGPT’s answers?

No. Ads appear below ChatGPT’s answer and are labeled as sponsored. OpenAI states that ads do not influence the answers ChatGPT gives. Organic mentions come from the model and the sources it finds, not from ad spend.

Does organic visibility in AI answers help paid ads?

There are signs it does. Seer Interactive found that on Google queries with an AI Overview, brands cited in the AI Overview had an average paid click-through rate of 15.74% in 2025, compared with 11.19% for brands that were not cited.

Does ranking on Google mean ChatGPT will mention my brand?

Not necessarily. An Ahrefs study of 15,000 long-tail queries found that only about 8% of URLs cited by ChatGPT ranked in Google’s top 10 for the same query. AI assistants draw on many sources beyond the top results.
