ChatGPT ads vs. Google Ads: when each makes sense for e-commerce

ChatGPT ads and Google Ads compared for online shops: targeting, formats, tracking, reporting, budgets, traffic quality – and when to test which.

By myadai · Published · Updated · Facts checked

Short answer: For most online shops, Google Ads stays the core channel: it reaches people who type what they want to buy, uses your product feed and has mature measurement. ChatGPT ads reach people in the middle of a conversation – often comparing and deciding – and are worth a measured test once your tracking is clean. Run them alongside Google, not instead of it.

How the intent differs

On Google, people tell you what they want in a few words, and you bid on those words. In ChatGPT there are no keywords to buy. You describe the conversations you want to appear in, and OpenAI matches ads using the whole conversation. Its own documentation says context hints “are not exact-match keywords or targeting rules, and they do not guarantee delivery” (OpenAI).

That means less control over exact queries and more reach into the comparison phase: “Which running shoe is best for flat feet and under $150?” is a typical ChatGPT question, and the ad appears directly under the answer.

Product feeds: Google is ahead, ChatGPT is catching up

Google Shopping ads are built from Merchant Center product data, “not keywords”, and show photo, title, price and store (Google Ads Help). Most shops already have this feed.

ChatGPT has product-feed campaigns in beta, with images, titles, ratings and prices. OpenAI says feed ads have been “among the strongest-performing ads in our program to date”. Products uploaded for ads do not appear in organic ChatGPT answers during the beta (OpenAI).

Measurement: mature vs. new

Google offers enhanced conversions (hashed first-party data) and consent mode, which models conversions when visitors decline cookies (Google Ads Help, consent mode). ChatGPT ads have a pixel and a Conversions API with deduplication and selectable attribution windows – solid, but new, and with one open inconsistency in how view-through conversions are counted (see our tracking guide).

For a fair comparison, use the same conversion (for example purchases), the same attribution window and the same time period in both platforms.

Google already shows ads in its AI answers

You do not need ChatGPT to advertise in AI answers. Google shows text and Shopping ads from existing Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns inside AI Overviews in 12 English-language markets, including the US. Requirements and limits, according to Google Ads Help:

  • Search campaigns need broad match or keywordless targeting (AI Max for Search, Performance Max, Shopping or Dynamic Search Ads).
  • “You can’t opt out of serving ads in AI Overviews” – and you cannot target them specifically.
  • Google “currently doesn’t offer segmented reporting” for ads within AI Overviews.
  • No ads in AI Overviews for sensitive categories such as finance, healthcare, alcohol and gambling.

At Google Marketing Live on May 20, 2026, Google announced further ad formats for AI Mode, including Conversational Discovery ads and AI-powered Shopping ads (Google). Google did not name countries or dates in that announcement.

What we know about traffic quality

Data is still thin and partly contradictory:

  • An academic study of 973 e-commerce sites with August 2024 to July 2025 data found ChatGPT referrals made up less than 0.2% of sessions and converted worse than organic search; conversion rates rose over the period (PPC Land, Digiday). This covers organic ChatGPT referrals, not ads.
  • Similarweb found that 89% of consumers who use AI for shopping also use search engines: “Consumers are not switching tools – they are stacking them” (Similarweb).
  • OpenAI cites an e-commerce advertiser with a 3x return on ad spend over 28 days and a partner reporting that over 80% of ad-driven ChatGPT traffic came from new customers – anonymous examples, not benchmarks (OpenAI, August 31, 2026).

The honest conclusion: measure it on your own site before you scale.

When each makes sense

Stay focused on Google Ads if

  • your conversion tracking or product feed still has gaps – fix those first;
  • you sell in a category ChatGPT ads do not allow;
  • your budget is too small to test a second channel properly.

Test ChatGPT ads if

  • customers compare before buying (considered purchases, gifts, products with many options);
  • you are a challenger brand that ChatGPT rarely names in its organic answers;
  • your Google search costs are rising and you look for reach earlier in the decision;
  • you can run a test for several weeks with clean tracking and a clear target.

Use both together: Google captures existing demand; ChatGPT ads can put you into the conversations where the decision is made. Organic visibility in AI answers ties both together – see organic vs. paid visibility in AI answers.

FAQ

Should an online shop switch budget from Google Ads to ChatGPT ads?

Not as a switch. Google Ads remains the larger and more mature channel for e-commerce, with product feeds, keyword intent and established measurement. ChatGPT ads are best run as a measured test alongside it, with a separate budget, clean tracking and a clear cost-per-acquisition target.

Can I advertise in Google’s AI Overviews?

Yes, indirectly. Text and Shopping ads from existing Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns can appear in AI Overviews in 12 English-language markets including the US, if the campaign uses broad match or keywordless targeting. You cannot target or exclude AI Overviews, and Google does not report them separately.

Does ChatGPT traffic convert better than Google traffic?

The evidence is mixed. A study of 973 e-commerce sites (data from August 2024 to July 2025) found ChatGPT referral traffic converted worse than organic search and made up less than 0.2% of sessions. Newer data is scarce, so measure it on your own site.
